Our Apple Charlotte Dessert is an easier alternative to apple pie or crumble. Dempster’s® 100% Whole Wheat Bread takes the place of batter and you can use your favourite apple pie filling and granola for a no-fuss dessert you can whip up when pressed for time. Serves four.

INGREDIENTS

  • 10 slices Dempster's® 100% Whole Wheat Bread
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) butter, at room temperature
  • 3 cups (750 mL) apple pie filling
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) granola

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Generously butter four 6-oz (175 mL) ramekins; set aside.
  3. With rolling pin, roll each slice bread into 1/4-inch (1 mm) thickness.
  4. Cut out four 3-inch (8 cm) rounds to line bottom of each ramekin.
  5. Cut twelve 4 x 2 1/2-inch (10 x 7 cm) rectangles to line sides of ramekins, overlapping slightly.
  6. Fill each bread-lined ramekin with apple pie filling and sprinkle with granola.
  7. Place on parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling.
  9. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
