Classic Smash Burgers with Cheese
Our Classic Smash Burgers with Cheese on Dempster’s® Signature Potato Hamburger Buns are comfort-food favourites. Patties are pressed down in the pan as they cook and then topped with cheese to create savoury cheeseburgers that always satisfy. Serves four.
INGREDIENTS4 Dempster’s® Signature Potato Hamburger Buns, split and toasted 1 lb (500 g) lean ground beef 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper 4 tsp (20 mL) canola oil 4 slices American cheese 1/4 cup (60 mL) mayonnaise 4 tsp (20 mL) mustard 4 tsp (20 mL) ketchup 16 slices bread-and-butter pickles 1/2 cup (125 mL) diced white onion
- Heat griddle or large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Divide ground beef into 4 portions; season with salt and pepper. Roll each portion into ball.
- Brush pan with oil; add burger balls to pan, smashing with heatproof spatula to flatten into 1/2-inch (1 cm) thick patties. Cook burgers, turning halfway through, for 5 to 7 minutes or until instant-read thermometer inserted into centre of burger reads 160°F (71°C). Top each burger with cheese slice; cook for about 1 minute or until cheese starts to melt.
- Assemble burgers in buns with mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, pickles and onion.
Tip: Make this a double cheeseburger by stacking patties.
